How browser voices work in Taan

Taan’s local narration uses the Web Speech API, which means voice options come from your browser and operating system.

Why voices vary

Windows, macOS, Linux, Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and mobile browsers expose different voice lists. Some voices sound natural; others are more robotic.

The best results usually happen when the selected voice language matches the document language.

Why desktop is recommended

Many mobile browsers restrict speech features or expose fewer voices. Desktop browsers are more predictable for long narration sessions.

Taan still lets mobile visitors explore the site, but full narration is currently optimized for desktop.

Quick checklist

  • Choose a voice in the same language as the text.
  • Test speed before starting a long chapter.
  • Use desktop for the most stable beta experience.

Common questions

Can Taan install better voices?

Not directly. Browser narration depends on voices installed or exposed by the system.

Will AI voices be added?

They may be evaluated separately, but the current public beta focuses on browser narration.
